Strip and Advise Repair of Descale Hood for the Steel Industry 3

Refax, Inc. was commissioned to complete a "strip and advise" for one of our customers. A strip and advise is done when a customer has a worn or broken piece of equipment that they would like repaired as opposed to being subject to the cost of new. The benefit of this process is that Refax will bring the equipment, economically, to like new standards.

Descale Hoods used in the flat-rolled process wear out due to a large amount of high-pressure water (2000-2200psi) pushed through the hood system. The water is used in removing scale from the plate by being specifically directed by the hood as it passes through the hot strip. The repair involved disassembling the hood to remove the liners, gates, and side discharge chutes. The hood is then cleaned using sand/water blasting and hand grinding. Once cleaned of all debris the inspection and report explaining our suggested repairs and cost is completed and submitted to our client for approval. Once approved we use the customer supplied 2D CAD drawings to fabricate/replace all parts and liners that failed the inspection criteria.

Material used for fabrication consisted of A36 and stainless steel; all liners were produced from SA1750CR chromium carbide overlay plate. Once all fabrication repairs are complete, new liners assembled, new gates constructed and installed, add a coat of red oxide primer, and processed by our quality control department; the hood is returned to our customer.

Repaired Descale Hood Specifications

Product Description The Descale Hood's primary function is to remove scale from the plate as it passes through the hot strip. The hot strip is where the plate is processed to the desired size. As the plate is manipulated to the correct dimension it is run under the descale hood several times to ensure that there are no imperfections or scale inclusions in the plate as it's rolled. Due to there being a large amount of high-pressure water for descaling (2000-2200psi), the hood and liners wear out.
