Furnace Cone Transportation

This was a great project and we have produced several of these over the years. Fabricating a 60-ton piece of steel making equipment is a seriously big undertaking. Refax, Inc. was up for the challenge.

A furnace cone is located on the lower section of a bottom-blown oxygen furnace for the steel industry. Prints were customer supplied 2D CAD drawings. Refax fabricated the cone from A516 Grade 70 and A36 steel plate. This job allowed us to utilize all of our strengths, and we are proud to say that the whole project from beginning to end was completed in our shop. The primary processes used on this project included burning, bending/forming, fitting, arc welding per ASME standards, third-party NDT testing of all welds, heat treatment for stress relief performed in-house, and our quality control process.

Refax's shop also has a unique advantage due to our large bay door size, 30' wide 35' high. The outside trucking company was able to back into our shop and drive away without any out of the ordinary handling, and the final OD of the flange was 21' with a height of over 10'.
